NovelNotifier

NovelNotifier is an Android app for following and reading web novels. It keeps your Novel Updates reading lists in sync on your phone, and it lets you browse, read and download from the Japanese sites Syosetu (なろう) and Kakuyomu (カクヨム).

It started as a clean-room replacement for the old Notifications for Novel Updates app, which was last released in 2019 and no longer works. It shares no code with that app.

What It Does

The app covers three sites, and each one gets its own section in the drawer. All three share one in-app reader and one offline ePub library.

  • Novel Updates. Novel Updates has no public API. The app reads the site through embedded WebViews using your own login session, the same way your browser would. Changes like mark-as-read or moving a series to another list are written back through the same endpoints the website itself uses. There is no Cloudflare bypass.
  • Syosetu. Uses Syosetu’s official, documented JSON API for search, rankings and metadata. If you log in, your bookmarks and your しおり (reading position) sync too.
  • Kakuyomu. Uses the open GraphQL endpoint that Kakuyomu’s own website uses. You can browse and read without an account. If you log in, your follows and your reading position sync.

The app also limits how often it hits each site: at most one request every 10 seconds, covers spaced 1.5 seconds apart, and a 10-minute rest after every 120 jobs. A big library takes hours to fill in, so you aren’t hammering the site.

Who Is This For?

  • Built for: Novel Updates users who want lists, unread counts and chapter alerts on Android, and readers of Japanese web novels who want Syosetu and Kakuyomu in the same app, with offline ePubs and optional AI translation.
  • Not for: iOS users, or anyone who wants a scraper that gets around site protections. If Cloudflare shows a challenge that doesn’t clear on its own, you complete it yourself.

Key Features

1. Your Novel Updates Library, Kept in Sync

  • Reading lists with covers, unread badges, search, grid or list layout, and four sort modes.
  • Chapter alerts from your personal Novel Updates RSS feed. The app picks up the feed for you, so there’s no URL to copy. You can mute alerts per list or per series.
  • Read marks sync across devices through Novel Updates’ read-activity feed.
  • New chapters are handled conservatively. A chapter only counts as new if its number is higher than anything already stored, so a blank or broken page can’t wipe your cached data.

2. Reader and Offline Library

  • An in-app reader with ‹ Prev / Next ›, sepia/dark/light themes, a serif/sans switch, adjustable font size, and a JavaScript toggle for each novel.
  • Your reading position syncs back to Syosetu and Kakuyomu. On a bookmarked Syosetu series, opening a later chapter moves your しおり forward on the site. On Kakuyomu, opening an episode records your position, which the site shows as 続きから読む. Both need you to be logged in to that site. You can also set it by hand from the reader’s ⋮ menu: Set しおり to this chapter on Syosetu (this can also move it back), or Set reading position here on Kakuyomu.
  • The reader decodes font-substitution anti-scraping, where a page looks like English but the underlying text is gibberish. That decoder is also published on its own as font-decipher.
  • Opt in per series and chapters are saved as standard ePub 3 books. Books are split by volume, or into 100-chapter parts when there are no volume numbers. Bulk downloads keep running when the screen is off.
  • Every chapter you open is also stored automatically for offline reading, with cached tables of contents. When the network is gone, a “Stored chapters” list shows what you still have.
  • Private mode. Flag any list or category as hidden (Novel Updates lists, Syosetu 分類, Kakuyomu folders) and lock it behind your fingerprint or screen lock. Hidden series disappear from every screen and never notify; R18 content sits behind the same unlock.
  • Long-press any Japanese word for its reading, part of speech and JMdict meanings. This works fully offline (Kuromoji plus a bundled 499k-entry JMdict, about 80 MB unpacked the first time you turn it on).

3. AI Translation and Covers (Bring Your Own Key)

Paste an OpenAI-compatible API key (OpenRouter, OpenAI or a local server) into Settings → Translation. The English then appears under each Japanese paragraph and is saved inside the offline ePub. From the reader menu you can switch between JP+EN, Japanese only, or English only.

Long chapters are split into chunks, and the app sends two chunks at a time, so a chapter takes about half as long as before. In one measured run, a 287-paragraph chapter took 169 seconds.

Each series can have its own lock files: prompt.txt, glossary.txt and voices.txt. These are the same idea as in Novel Mill, and files from Novel Mill can be pasted straight in. After each chapter the app adds any new names and voice notes it finds, so the next chapter keeps them consistent.

The key stays on your device and is never included in backups. The README estimates about half a cent per chapter with a quality-tier model, and about $0.01–0.02 per AI cover. Check live prices before relying on these numbers. Titles and synopses in rankings and search are translated for free on-device with ML Kit. On Syosetu and Kakuyomu series pages, the title also gets a dimmed English line under the Japanese.

4. Backups and Themes

Settings → Back up library saves one zip with your lists, chapter caches, covers and settings. It never includes your password, login sessions or feed tokens. Built-in themes are light, dark, AMOLED black and Material You. You can also make your own theme from a JSON file:

{
  "name": "Ocean",
  "light": { "primary": "#0B57D0", "background": "#F8F9FF", "surface": "#F8F9FF" },
  "dark":  { "primary": "#A8C7FA", "background": "#0F1420", "surface": "#0F1420" }
}

Dark mode

Your Own ePubs: the Local Library (new in v3.0)

  • Create local libraries next to your sites (for example Fiction or Light Novels), each with its own grid, search and shelves.
  • Import ePubs by copying them in, or link files where they already sit on your phone, including whole folders at once. Linked files are never moved or changed.
  • Multi-volume ePubs are grouped into a series automatically. You can merge, move and rename series, edit their details, and pick a cover from any volume.
  • The chapter list comes from the ePub’s own table of contents, and chapters open quickly through the Readium reading engine, with illustrations and cover pages.
  • Shelves can be hidden behind your fingerprint or screen lock, and the library is included in backups. Duplicates and broken links are found in the background so you can clear them with one tap.
  • Reading is now offline-first: chapters you’ve stored open instantly with no network, and when the real translator page is known the app goes straight there instead of through Novel Updates’ redirect.

Translate Your Own Library (new in v3.0.1)

  • Bring your own translation key and NovelNotifier can now translate the ePubs in your local library, not just the sites.
  • From a series page you can translate the title and description (the translation sits dimmed under the original and can be toggled), or translate every chapter of every volume with live progress. Chapters that are already done are skipped, so you can stop and pick it up later.
  • The translate toggle on a volume page now works, and translated chapters open automatically in the reader with the side-by-side view, text-to-speech and re-translate. Your ePub files are never changed; translations are stored separately.
  • There is now a plain-language user guide in English and Japanese covering every feature (docs/USERGUIDE.md).

Paged Reading and Watched Folders (new in v3.1 and v3.1.1)

  • Your own ePubs can now be read as real pages: ⋮ → Paged view (epub) lets you swipe page by page with your page theme and serif or sans font applied, while ‹ Prev / Next › still jump between chapters. The scrolling text view is still there for translation work.
  • Linked folders are now watched. Each time you open the library, any new ePubs dropped into a linked folder (from Calibre, downloads or anywhere else) are imported automatically, at most once every 5 minutes. ☰ → Re-scan linked folders checks straight away.
  • If you move or reorganise your files, the old entries show up under the 🧹 missing-files row for one-tap cleanup, and the new locations are picked up on the next scan.
  • Duplicate detection is stricter, catching re-rips with commas in the name and matching volume numbers in file names.
  • v3.1.1 fixes libraries linked before v3.1: the app now works out the folder from the books already in it, so new ePubs there import on the next scan without re-linking.

Reliability and Paged Reading by Default (new in v3.1.2)

  • Paged view is now the default for your own ePubs, with real swipeable pages in your theme and font. The scroll view is still one ⋮ tap away when you want to translate.
  • Big libraries are much sturdier: tested against a 5,772-book library, the library index can no longer be corrupted by a full disk or two imports running at once, and large bulk imports no longer run out of memory.
  • Covers are stored as small JPEGs instead of multi-megabyte images, and existing oversized covers are shrunk automatically in the background.
  • Automatic duplicate deletion has been removed because it could merge different series in large libraries. Real duplicates are still caught when you import, and bulk deletion never happens on its own.
  • Searches that match nothing now say “No matches” instead of showing the empty-library message.

Smarter Chapter Loading and a Smoother Library (new in v3.2 to v3.2.4)

  • Chapters from Novel Updates now load the real chapter even when the link bounces through marker posts, cover pages or series listings, instead of saving the wrong page.
  • Series listing pages and redirect stubs are no longer saved as chapters, and hidden anti-piracy junk text (watermarks in the background colour or split words) is stripped out.
  • When a chapter can’t load you find out quickly instead of waiting about 30 seconds, and Retry now tries the full redirect chain again.
  • Scrolling the library grid and list is smooth even with very large libraries, and there’s a thin scrollbar on the right edge.
  • In paged ePub reading, font-size changes apply straight away and reopening a book takes you back to the exact page.
  • Restoring a backup can no longer overwrite a bigger ePub library already on the device, and every past data-loss fix is now checked automatically before each release.
  • v3.2.1 fixes an “app isn’t responding” freeze when scrolling very large libraries. Cover images are now looked up from an index instead of scanning the cover folder for every tile, so scrolling stays smooth and memory use drops back to normal (tested on a 5,700-book library: about 60–100 MB instead of about 600 MB).
  • v3.2.2 adds shelf bubbles: series tiles and list rows show a small chip naming the shelf each series belongs to, so you can see where things live at a glance while scrolling (unshelved series show nothing).
  • v3.2.2 also restores your scroll position: open a series, come back, and you’re at the same spot instead of the top. Each list remembers its own place, including library shelves, Novel Updates lists and every site’s home and category pages.
  • v3.2.3 fixes freezes when scrolling or sorting large libraries while screen-mirroring or remote-control apps are connected, and the library stays responsive while a watched-folder scan imports new books.
  • v3.2.3 also tidies up merging series: the grid refreshes straight away, and opening a series that was merged away shows a clear “merged or removed” notice with a back button instead of a blank black screen.
  • v3.2.4 adds an “Unshelved” row to the library drawer that shows only series not on any shelf, so you can sort the rest without re-scanning what’s already filed. “All books” now shows whenever a filter is on, so you’re one tap from the full library.

Install

  • Requires Android 8.0 or newer.
  • Download the latest NovelNotifier-v<version>.apk from Releases and install it. New versions install over the old one and keep your library. From v2.3 the app also checks GitHub once a day and can download and install updates itself (with a changelog). You can still add the GitHub URL to Obtainium — the two methods do not conflict.
  • First launch: Settings → Log in on Novel Updates, and onboarding takes it from there. Syosetu and Kakuyomu work without an account.
  • If you installed v1.2 or earlier, you need to reinstall once. From v1.2.1 the app is signed with a different key, so back up your library, uninstall, install the new APK, then restore.

NovelNotifier(日本語)

1. Novel Updates

作品ごとにロックファイル prompt.txt、glossary.txt、voices.txt を持てます。

{
  "name": "Ocean",
  "light": { "primary": "#0B57D0", "background": "#F8F9FF", "surface": "#F8F9FF" },
  "dark":  { "primary": "#A8C7FA", "background": "#0F1420", "surface": "#0F1420" }
}

  • Novel Updates
